Dr. Helena Daffern and Dr. Gavin Kearney have received funding from the School of Physics, Engineering and Technology to form a mini Doctoral Training Centre around ‘Sound Interactions in the Metaverse’. The training centre will recruit its first cohort in 2023 with another round of students in 2024. The centre is supported by the BBC, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Sonical and the Leeds-York NHS Foundation Trust. It will be highly multidisciplinary, looking at different challenges and applications in metaverse research, and will span across several University departments, but will have a strong audio engineering foundation at its core. Topics include audio for mental health, psychoacoustics in the Metaverse and real-time signal processing for immersive and interactive metaverse technologies. The first round of projects are expected to be advertised in the Spring.
