Biography

Jacob Cooper is a Technical Specialist in Immersive Audio at the AudioLab, University of York. He holds a BEng in Music Technology Systems and an MSc in Audio & Music Technology, both obtained from the AudioLab.

Whilst studying for his MSc, Jacob worked as a technician on the MINERVA (Musical Interactions in Networked Experiences using Real-time Virtual Audio) project. He presented this work alongside other members of the research team at the AES International Conference on Audio for Virtual and Augmented Reality in Seattle in 2022.

After a short break following his MSc, Jacob returned to the AudioLab as a Research Technician, working as part of the research team led by Professor Gavin Kearney. His work at the lab has involved creating spatial audio workflows in DAWs, working with virtual production technologies and designing perceptual listening tests and analysing their results. More recently, Jacob worked as a technician on the SAFFIRE (Scalable Audio Frameworks For Immersive Realtime Experiences) in conjunction with BBC R&D and the BBC Singers; this project looked at networked music performance in a shared virtual space. He now works as a part of the AudioLab’s technical team as a Technical Specialist in Immersive Audio and is involved in a wide range of research activities at the lab.

Outside at his role at the AudioLab, Jacob is a guitarist and an active member of the York music scene. He enjoys performing, as well as going to gigs, showing support for other local artists and the great independent venues that York has to offer.
